SUMMARY:Physician Wellness Committee Inaugural Concert (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:From Dr. Elisabeth Poorman\, Chair\, Physician Wellness Committee for the King County Medical Society \nGreetings to all King County Medical Society members and allies\, \nI write to you today to first and foremost invite you to the Physician Wellness Committee’s Inaugural Concert\, which will be a virtual concert on Friday\, July 10\, at 6pm PST (music starts at 6:30 pm). The concert is open to everyone\, with an optional intro and mingling session before and after for those interested in the committee. \nSign up here: https://www.groupmuse.com/events/10781-physician-wellness-committee-s-inaugural-concert-featuring-pianist-geisa-dutra \nThe purpose of the Physician Wellness Committee will be to support the well-being of our physicians and consequently\, our patients. With so much tragedy and terror in the world\, including an ongoing pandemic and the persistent racist killing of unarmed black people in the US and subsequent unrest\, it can be hard to argue the importance of this topic. But when I say “wellness\,” I mean not only the well-being of an individual physician\, but a systemic response to our distress and moral injury as a catalyst for institutional change. \nPhysicians\, as we have seen\, are the canary in the coal mine of everyone’s safety. If we do not have personal protective equipment\, our patients are not safe. If we are overworked\, care quality decreases and our patients suffer. If we cannot provide the kind of care our patients deserve\, we experience moral injury that can only be relieved by making our whole healthcare system more just and equitable. \nIn the coming year\, I hope to work on specific goals with the committee members including\, \n1) Improving access to mental health care for health care providers and reducing stigma \n2) Protecting physicians who speak out about unsafe conditions \n3) Helping physicians to channel their distress into media and political advocacy \n4) Advocating for more openness from the Physician Health Program \n5) Supporting individual wellness initiatives \nAnd other initiatives that our members are passionate about. \nIf you are interested in learning more and potentially joining this committee\, please fill out this survey \n  \nIn solidarity\, \nDr. Elisabeth Poorman\, MD\, MPH \nConcert Schedule \n6:00-6:30 Intro to the physician wellness committee\n6:30-7:45 Public Concert\n7:45-7:55 Q&A with performer Geisa Dutra\n7:55-9:00 Q&A with Physician wellness Committee \nCost: $3 to sign up\, $10 suggested musician donation \nMore about the musician: https://www.groupmuse.com/musicians/1755-geisa-dutra

SUMMARY:CME Webinar: Eliminating Disparities in Healthcare: What Can You Do
DESCRIPTION:While the health of Americans overall has improved dramatically over the last century\, these gains have not been shared equally\, with racial and ethnic minorities continuing to have worse health outcomes. Examples of this include higher rates of hypertension\, myocardial infarctions\, strokes\, heart failure\, and chronic kidney disease and lower life expectancy seen in black individuals\, and the increased rates of diabetes and infant mortality rate seen in Native Americans. \nEducation on healthcare disparities has focused on statistics and awareness. To address this issue effectively\, the program Eliminating Disparities in Healthcare: What Can You Do? will provide physicians with an understanding of the causes of healthcare disparity and tools to help achieve healthcare equity. \nAGENDA\nWelcome and Introduction\nSocial Determinants of Health\nDisparities in the COVID epidemic\nEliminating Disparities\nWhat Can Providers Do to Overcome Disparities\nQ&A Session \nFor more information and to register for the event\, please click here.

SUMMARY:WHA Webinar: Dollar$ and $ense Seeing the Impacts of COVID-19 Through a Financial Lens
DESCRIPTION:Join the Washington Health Alliance for the second part of their webinar series “Dollar$ and $ense: Seeing the Impacts of COVID-19 Through a Financial Lens\,” featuring special guest speaker\, A. Mark Fendrick MD. \nDr. Fendrick conceptualized and coined the term Value-Based Insurance Design (V-BID) and currently directs the V-BID Center at the University of Michigan\, the leading advocate for development\, implementation\, and evaluation of innovative health benefit plans. His research focuses on how clinician payment and consumer engagement initiatives impact access to care\, quality of care\, and health care costs. Dr. Fendrick has authored over 250 articles and book chapters and has received numerous awards for the creation and implementation of value-based insurance design. His perspective and understanding of clinical and economic issues have fostered collaborations with numerous government agencies\, health plans\, professional societies\, and health care companies. He is a member of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation at the University of Michigan\, where he remains clinically active in the practice of general internal medicine.  He will examine: \n\nCoronavirus testing and treatment costs;\nprojection of net reduction in medical costs for 2020 for payers\, providers and purchasers;\nthe impact of delayed or deferred care; and\nthe opportunities to permanently eliminate wasteful\, non-evidenced based care and strategies for implementation.\n\nAfter the presentation\, Alliance Executive Director Nancy Giunto will moderate a panel discussion to illuminate the cost impact from the perspectives of purchasers\, payers\, and providers. Joining us will be Lisa Brandenburg\, President\, UW Medicine Hospitals & Clinics\, Lee Mills McGrath\, Senior Vice President of Provider Strategy and Solutions at Premera Blue Cross\, and Megan Pedersen\, Director of Office of Labor Relations at King County\, who will respond to Dr. Fendrick’s comments\, take audience questions\, and share their perspectives on: \n\nthe claims paid in Q2 versus projections;\ntrends in deferred care for essential health care needs;\npredictions for the rest of the year; and\nthe steps being taken now to stabilize Washington’s health care system.\n\nTo register\, email Adria at amoskowitz@wahealthalliance.org. Space is limited so please register today. If you cannot attend\, the webinar will be recorded and made available.

SUMMARY:Webex Lead Poisoning Healthcare Stakeholder Meeting
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Public Health Seattle & King County\, the Somali Health Board\, and Horn of Africa Services\, King County Medical Society has created a Healthcare Stakeholder group to create strategies to prevent lead poisoning in our area. \nThis work is driven by community members in our area\, but it is our hope that healthcare providers\, such as yourself\, can provide a context that community members may not have\, and serve as a critical part of this conversation that is essential for policy development in the future. This diverse group will consist of a wide range of healthcare professionals (MD\, PA\, RN\, MA\, clinic managers/directors\, etc). \nMembers of this group will also have the opportunity to participate in a year-end Health and Housing conference attended by healthcare professionals\, housing providers\, landlords\, and community members. If you have any questions\, please contact Salem Adisu at sadisu@kcmsociety.org.
