Elisabeth Rosenthal
7:30PM, Monday, April 24, 2017
Downstairs at Town Hall
Our country’s healthcare system needs serious work—but how did it get so bad? In An American Sickness, award-winning New York Times reporter Dr. Elisabeth Rosenthal breaks down the nature of this affliction, explaining the symptoms, identifying the causes, and outlining a course of treatment. Rosenthal shares strategies on how to decode medical doublespeak, avoid the pitfalls of the pharmaceuticals racket, and get the care you need. She discusses the doctor-patient relationship, explaining why the medical profession lacks transparency and how patients can navigate the byzantine system. Rosenthal lays out the social and financial incentives that have encouraged a deeply flawed system and outlines a plan for its rehabilitation.

Seattle Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Workshops and Classes (in partnership with Mindfulness Northwest)

The Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals is designed to promote mental health by engaging the mind and the body through experiential learning. The course is adapted from Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. As defined by Dr. Zinn, “Mindfulness is paying attention, on purpose, to the present moment, non-judgmentally.” Mindfulness is an excellent antidote to the stresses of a modern medical practice as it invites us to stop, breathe, observe, and connect with one’s inner experience.
